Why Drivers Choose KW Suspension Coilovers
KW Automotive has spent more than three decades engineering performance suspension in Fichtenberg, Germany. The brand sits at the top of the European premium-coilover tier and supplies factory OEM suspension on several Porsche, BMW M, and Mercedes-AMG models. That OEM-grade engineering tolerance carries through to the aftermarket Variant lineup that the enthusiast community knows.
The customers who buy KW coilovers from us share a common profile. They drive German performance cars or American platforms where ride compliance and damper precision matter as much as outright stiffness. They want suspension certified to OEM-grade durability standards. They want a clear product ladder from fixed-damping street use through independently adjustable track configurations. KW delivers all three.
KW dampers use stainless-steel strut bodies that resist corrosion in road salt and harsh climates. Every KW coilover Series sold in North America carries TÜV certification — the German technical inspection standard that governs suspension safety, ride height adjustability, and durability requirements for European OEM vehicles. That same approval framework governs factory suspension on most European cars sold in North America. Few aftermarket brands run their kits through it.
Owners installing KW coilovers report that the ride feels right from the first install and stays that way through years of street duty. Coilovers.com support volume on KW kits runs low across the catalog, which tells us what we already expected from the manufacturing pedigree. The kits hold up, and when they need refresh service the rebuild path through KW Automotive North America keeps them on the car rather than in landfill.
The KW Variant Lineup
KW's coilover lineup is organized by Variant numbers — Variant 1, KW V2 (Variant 2), Variant 3 — plus the Street Comfort line and the KW Clubsport coilovers motorsport series. The Variant naming reflects what's adjustable on each kit, not a tier ranking. Below is what each kit actually does.
KW Variant 3 — Independent Rebound and Compression Adjustment
The Variant 3 is the most-searched and most-installed KW coilover kit in North America. It's the only Variant in the standard lineup that adjusts both rebound damping and compression damping independently. Rebound (12 clicks) controls how the damper extends after being compressed. Compression (16 clicks) controls how it resists initial compression over bumps and during weight transfer. Having both adjustments separated lets a driver tune the suspension feel without compromising one for the other.
The V3 is the kit we recommend for drivers who plan to track their cars, run regular autocross, or want the ability to dial in suspension feel across street and track use. It uses the same stainless-steel construction as the rest of the KW lineup and carries the standard KW two-year limited warranty.
KW Variant 1 — Fixed Factory-Engineered Damping
The Variant 1 is KW's fixed-damping coilover. No adjustment dials, just KW's factory-set damping curve calibrated specifically for each vehicle. The advantage is simplicity: install the kit, set ride height, drive. The damper tune is engineered around what works for the chassis and the typical driver, not what someone might dial in incorrectly.
The V1 is the right pick for drivers who want the ride-height adjustment and corner-balance benefits of a true coilover without damper-adjustment complexity. It's the kit we recommend for street-only builds where the driver is not planning to make track-day or autocross adjustments.
KW Variant 2 — Adjustable Rebound Damping
The Variant 2 sits between the V1 and V3. It adds 12-click rebound damping adjustment to the fixed-compression base of the V1. Rebound adjustment alone lets the driver tune how the suspension recovers from bumps and load transfer without changing the initial bump response.
The V2 makes sense for drivers who want some tunability but aren't planning to run track time that demands independent compression control. It's also the better choice when the V3's full adjustment range is more than the build needs.
KW Street Comfort — Daily-Driver Tune
The Street Comfort line is engineered for daily-driver builds where ride comfort takes priority over performance edge. Damping is softer than the Variant 1. Ride height drops are more conservative. The focus is on adjustable lowering without sacrificing the factory ride character. KW Street Comfort coilovers are available across supported chassis — call us at 1-800-460-9106 for specific vehicle fitment and pricing.
KW Clubsport — Track and Motorsport
The Clubsport series is KW's track-oriented coilover lineup, available in two-way (rebound + compression) and three-way (high-speed compression added) configurations. Spring rates run substantially higher than the Variant lineup. Top mounts are typically rod-end style or camber-adjustable. The kits are intended for cars that see real track time. Clubsport availability varies by platform — call us to discuss specific applications.
KW DDC — Dynamic Damping Control (Electronic Adjustable)
KW DDC (Dynamic Damping Control) is KW's electronically adjustable damping platform. DDC kits add app-controlled or in-cabin adjustable damping to the threaded ride-height base — useful for dual-purpose street and track builds where the driver wants to change damping characteristics between use cases without crawling under the car. DDC integration varies by platform; some chassis support full DDC, others integrate with factory adaptive systems. Call us at 1-800-460-9106 for DDC availability and chassis-specific configuration.

Is KW Worth the Higher Price Point?
KW coilovers sit at a higher price point than entry-level coilover platforms, and the question we get most often is whether the difference is worth it. The honest answer depends on what the car is doing.
For a street-driven enthusiast car that sees infrequent track use or just spends its life on canyon roads and the daily commute, KW's manufacturing tolerances, stainless-steel construction, and proven longevity earn the price difference. KW kits routinely run 60,000 miles or more on street duty before needing rebuild service. The rebuild network through KW Automotive North America means a 10-year-old KW kit can be brought back to factory spec rather than discarded.
For dedicated track cars where the damper sees real punishment, the V3 and Clubsport platforms hold up to consistent track abuse better than most aftermarket alternatives. Partly because of the construction, partly because KW's North American facility in Buford, Georgia actually rebuilds kits and knows their dampers cold. Whatever you bring them, they have probably already seen on a customer car running hard.
For drivers comparing KW directly against the value-tier coilover brands, the buying decision is less about features (most adjustable coilover platforms compete on feature parity) and more about long-term ownership. KW kits stay on the car longer and rebuild cleaner. That's the math that matters at higher price points.
Warranty and Rebuild Support
Every KW coilover kit Coilovers.com sells carries the KW Automotive North America factory warranty. Two years on the Variant lineup, with rebuild service available through KW's Buford, Georgia facility for the life of the kit. As an authorized dealer, we handle warranty claims directly with KW Automotive North America on our customers' behalf rather than routing them through third parties.
If you've had a KW kit on your car for several years and it's time for a rebuild, contact us and we'll route the coilovers to KW Buford for inspection, reseal, and refresh. Rebuild pricing runs a fraction of the cost of a new kit, and the rebuilt set typically performs identically to new.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between KW V1, V2, and V3?
The V1 has fixed factory-set damping with no adjustment dials. The V2 adds 12-click rebound damping adjustment. The V3 adds independent rebound and compression damping adjustment, with 12 clicks of rebound and 16 clicks of compression. All three use the same stainless-steel construction and platform-specific spring rates. The difference is what the driver can adjust after installation.
Do KW coilovers work with factory adaptive suspension (Magnetic Ride, DDC, EDC)?
It depends on the platform. Some KW kits ship with electronic cancellation modules that delete the factory adaptive system. Others integrate with the factory ECU through KW's DDC system. Each fitment page notes the adaptive-suspension requirements specific to that vehicle. Call us before ordering if you're unsure whether your car has adaptive suspension or how KW handles it.
How long do KW coilovers last?
Street-driven KW kits routinely run 60,000 miles or more before needing rebuild. Track-driven kits depend heavily on track conditions and event frequency, but most see 30-50 track days before rebuild becomes worthwhile. KW Automotive North America rebuilds dampers at the Buford facility for the life of the kit.
Are KW coilovers TÜV-certified?
Yes. Every KW coilover Series sold in North America carries TÜV certification, the German technical inspection standard that governs suspension safety, ride height adjustability, and durability requirements for European OEM vehicles.
Where are KW coilovers made?
KW coilovers are designed and manufactured at KW Automotive's facility in Fichtenberg, Germany. North American distribution, technical support, dyno tuning, and warranty rebuild service all happen at KW Automotive North America's Buford, Georgia facility.
Do I need a wheel alignment after installing KW coilovers?
Yes. After installing any coilover kit, a four-wheel alignment is essential. The new ride height changes camber, toe, and caster. Skipping the alignment causes uneven tire wear and poor handling. Plan the alignment as part of the install job.
