BC Racing coilover kit for the Porsche 911 and Bilstein B12 kit for the Boxster

Porsche Coilovers: 911, Cayman and Boxster

This article was written by Coilovers.com Owner and Principal, Lou Tortola.

Porsche coilovers for the 911, Cayman and Boxster are listed by generation, drivetrain and whether the car has PASM. Pick the listing that names your exact car, then decide whether to keep the factory electronics or cancel them.

We list kits from KW, Öhlins, Bilstein, BC Racing, Feal and Ksport across these cars. The 992 adds one more question: does your car have the factory front axle lift? Here is how the listings break down, and what each path means on the road and at the track.

These are the 911 splits exactly as our listing titles state them. Air-cooled cars are listed too, but most questions we get are about the water-cooled generations.

996, 1999 to 2005

BC Racing lists the 911 Carrera RWD (996) and a 911/911 Turbo AWD and Carrera 4 kit. Öhlins lists Road & Track for the Carrera RWD, the Carrera 4 and Turbo, and the GT2 and GT3. Feal splits the 996 into 2WD and AWD. KW lists the 996 Carrera 2, Carrera 4 and 4S, Turbo, GT2, GT3 and GT3 RS separately. Ksport lists the 996 Carrera 2 and Turbo AWD.

997, 2005 to 2012

BC Racing splits RWD and AWD, and splits 2005 to 2008 cars from the later 997.2 cars. KW lists the Carrera and Carrera S with and without PASM, with separate Convertible listings for PASM cars. Öhlins lists Road & Track for the Carrera RWD including S and GTS, the Carrera 4 and Turbo, and the GT2, GT3 and GT3 RS. Ksport lists the 997 2WD, the Turbo Carrera 4 and the GT3.

991, 2012 to 2019

BC Racing lists the 2012 to 2016 911 (991) NA RWD. KW splits the 991 Carrera 2/4 S and GTS by PASM and by PDCC. Öhlins lists Road & Track for the Carrera including 4, S and GTS, a Carrera Turbo listing, and TTX Pro for the GT3 and GT3 RS.

992, 2020 and up

BC Racing lists the 2020 to 2023 911 Carrera RWD (992). Öhlins lists Road & Track for the 2020 to 2024 992 Carrera and Turbo, including 4, S and GTS. Bilstein lists EVO SE kits for PASM cars, split by front axle lift.

RWD, AWD, PASM, PDCC and front axle lift all change which listing is yours. Confirm on the product page, or call 1-800-460-9106 with your VIN.

Cayman and Boxster Coilovers

The mid-engine cars follow the same logic.

986 and 987. BC Racing lists the 1997 to 2004 and 2005 to 2007 Boxster RWD and the 2008 to 2013 Cayman I/II Gen RWD. KW lists the 987 Cayman with and without PASM. Öhlins lists Road & Track for the 1998 to 2012 Boxster and Cayman, including S and R models. Ksport lists the 1996 to 2004 Boxster (986) and the 2006 to 2012 Cayman.

981. BC Racing lists the 2014 to 2016 Cayman RWD. KW lists the Boxster and Cayman (981), including S and GTS, with and without PASM. Öhlins lists Road & Track for the 2013 to 2016 Boxster and Cayman, excluding Spyder and GT4.

718 (982). BC Racing lists the 2016 to 2022 Cayman/Boxster 718 RWD. Öhlins lists the 2017 to 2024 718 Boxster and Cayman Road & Track, including S and GTS, excluding Spyder and GT4. KW lists both with and without PASM.

Note the Swift Springs wording on BC Racing's mid-engine titles. The Boxster, Cayman and 718 listings say "Swift Front Only," so Swift Springs SPEC-R springs are an upgrade option on the front of those kits. BC Racing's BR Series runs 30-click simultaneous compression and rebound.

PASM: Keep It, Plug Into It or Cancel It

PASM is Porsche's adaptive damping. If your car has it, you have three paths, and our listings show all of them.

Keep the electronics with Bilstein EVO SE

Bilstein builds the EVO SE for cars with factory electronic damping. Bilstein describes it as true plug-and-play with the car's electronic controls. We list it for the 992 Carrera, Carrera 4, 4S and S with PASM. The Targa 4 and 4S and the Turbo and Turbo S with PASM have listings too. Fit is per car, so match the listing to your build.

Go passive with a KW kit that includes cancellation

Many KW listings for PASM cars include the cancellation kit. The 2017 to 2023 718 Cayman (982) with PASM listing is sold as a KW V3 bundle with the cancellation kit included. The 997 Carrera with PASM listings carry KW V1 and KW V3 bundles.

Go passive with Öhlins and a separate cancellation kit

Öhlins sells PASM cancellation kits as separate parts. The Öhlins PASM cancellation kit titled 2013 to 2019 names 981, 982, 991 and 992 cars, excluding GT2, GT3 and GT4. Its years and chassis list do not line up for the 992, so 992 owners should call us to confirm. Separate kits cover the 997 Coupe, 997 Cabriolet, 987 Cayman and the GT3 and GT4 cars. Dealers describe these kits as plugging into the original damper connectors and switching off the warning lamps.

BC Racing's Porsche titles do not mention PASM, so call us before ordering a BC Racing kit for a PASM car. For more on how adaptive systems work, our guide to coilover technology covers the hardware side.

Front Axle Lift and KW HLS

A lowered 911 meets driveways and speed bumps with its nose first. Porsche's factory front axle lift raises the front for those moments, and it changes your coilover options on the 992.

Bilstein lists EVO SE kits for the 992 both with and without front axle lift suspension. Those are separate listings, so get this right before you order. The 2020 to 2025 911 Carrera, Carrera 4, 4S and S with front axle lift and PASM listing is one example. Shopping Porsche coilovers for a 992 starts with that one question.

KW also builds its own system, HLS (Hydraulic Lift System). It lifts the front axle on low-clearance cars and is available on KW V3 and higher kits for selected applications. None of our Porsche listing titles name HLS, so call us and we will check with KW for your car.

Track Days, Ride Height and Setup

Many of these cars see track time, and Porsche owners tend to know what they want. Match the coilover kit to the use, not to the badge. Porsche coilovers built for a GT3 at the track are a different tool from a kit for a Carrera that commutes.

Street with occasional track. Öhlins Road & Track brings DFV dual-flow valving. KW V3 gives independent compression and rebound. Both suit a car that drives to the circuit and home.

Dedicated track car. Öhlins lists TTX Pro for the 991 GT3 and GT3 RS and the Cayman GT4, plus DFV Dedicated for some Boxster, Cayman and 996 models. Feal hand-builds in Murrieta, California, with a time-attack focus.

Built to your spec. BC Racing builds nitrogen-charged monotube kits with custom spring rates available. Fortune Auto hand-builds in Virginia with custom valving; call us to check whether Fortune Auto builds for your Porsche.

Set ride height with the car on its wheels, let it settle, then align it. Our guide on how to set ride height on coilovers covers the method. Height changes alter camber and toe. Snug each locking collar once height is set. Unsprung weight on these cars is the wheel, tire, hub, brakes and part of the arms and damper. A coilover kit alone does not cut it. Lighter wheels do.

Porsche owners also ask how these brands got where they are. Our coilover brand history covers the background, and our guide to how coilovers affect ride quality helps you balance stance and comfort. Good performance suspension on a Porsche starts with the right listing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep PASM with coilovers on my Porsche?

On the cars we list it for, yes. Bilstein EVO SE is built for cars with factory electronic damping, and we list it for 992 Carrera, Targa and Turbo models with PASM. Other cars usually go passive with a cancellation kit. Call us with your VIN to check your car.

Do I need a PASM cancellation kit?

If you replace PASM dampers with passive coilovers, yes. Without one, the car shows warning lamps and fault messages. Many KW listings for PASM cars include the cancellation kit. Öhlins sells its PASM cancellation kits as separate parts, so order both together.

What is front axle lift, and does it affect coilovers?

It is Porsche's factory system for raising the front of the car over driveways and speed bumps. It matters for fitment. Bilstein lists separate EVO SE kits for 992 cars with and without front axle lift, so check which one your car has before ordering.

Does KW HLS work on a Porsche?

KW builds HLS for KW V3 and higher kits on selected applications. None of our Porsche listing titles name HLS. Call us and we will check with KW whether it is available for your car.

Do Cayman and Boxster coilovers interchange?

Some listings cover both. BC Racing lists one 2016 to 2022 Cayman/Boxster 718 RWD kit, and Öhlins lists combined Boxster and Cayman kits for several generations. KW lists them separately by model and PASM. Buy the listing that names your car.

Are BC Racing coilovers available for the 992?

We list a BC Racing kit for the 2020 to 2023 911 Carrera RWD (992). Its title does not mention PASM or front axle lift, so call us with your VIN before you order to confirm it suits your car.

Do I need an alignment after fitting coilovers to my Porsche?

Yes. Any change in ride height alters camber and toe. Set the height, let it settle, then align the car. Many owners corner balance at the same visit.

Not Sure Which Listing Fits Your Porsche?

Send us your VIN. We will confirm the generation, drivetrain, PASM, PDCC and front axle lift, then match it to the right kit and any cancellation parts it needs.
